Watford, Cassiobury Park and Iron Bridge Lock 1921

Here we see two horse-drawn narrowboats, 'Linnet' and 'Evelyn', at the attractively-sited lock in Cassiobury Park, Watford. This was just one lock in the long climb from the west edge of London up the Chilterns: 25 miles and 42 locks on the Grand Junction Canal (later to become part of the Grand Union), the original main transport artery between London and Birmingham.

As a boy my adventure playground was Cassiobury Park. Looking at the picture of the lock keepers cottage, all I remember of it was a derelict house beside the lock. In the summer we would swim here and occasionally jump from the bridge, we used to draw quite a crowd maybe this is why we were so foolhardy. As for the sacrilege of the Park Gates. Vandalism by the then Council, it beggars believe it was pulled down. The Council should totally rebuild down to the last brick Wooden gates an all..
