The Battle of Britain Memorial flight's Spitfire Mark XlX which was sold for £452,500 by Sotheby's at Summers Place, Billingshurst, West Sussex today (Sat). The aircraft went to an anonymous telephone buyer who fought off competition from five other telephone bidders and several others in the salesroom. In 1957 Britain's top scoring World War ll fighter ace Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson, then a Group Captain flew the aircraft to Biggin Hill as a founding aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
