A hooded bathchair stands before the Victorian buildings and the bronze statue of William Harvey, a 16th-century native of the town; he achieved renown for his work in discovering the fact that blood circulates within the body through the network of arteries, veins and capillaries. He holds a heart in his hand. In the company of the young sons of Charles I, he watched the Battle of Edgehill during the English Civil War, before dying in 1657 after reputedly taking poison after learning that he was losing his sight.
