Bruce McLaren 1961

New Zealander Bruce McLaren, founder of McLaren cars. I took this photo at the Aintree "200" meeting in April 1961 and he very kindly signed it for me at the British Grand Prix at Aintree in July 1961.

Awesome photo. Really great stuff. Seems so far removed from how F1 is these days.

Thank you for your kind words Paul.
In those days practice day was on a Friday and it cost 5/- to get in (25p in todays money) and for that you got access to the main stand and the paddock where you could touch the cars and talk to the drivers if you were brave enough.
Race day was on Saturday and it cost £1.2.6d, (One pound twelve and a half p in today's money) for the same access to the stand and paddock.
These days I cant' even afford to watch it on the TV!

The rapid development of "progress" I guess. Fascinating pictures though. Makes me wish, just a little bit, I could have experienced it all at that simpler time. Great that you're able to share these with people though!

Paul, In those days you would never see a driver deliberately force a fellow driver off the track to stop them passing, these days it's sometimes like watching very expensive banger racing, also the drivers didn't have hysterics when they won a race or sulking when they came second!
