History of the UWC Movement The movement can be split into three main groups of colleges: a) Wholly boarding colleges for students of sixteen to eighteen years who are all admitted on scholarships e.g. UWC of the Atlantic. b) Colleges which have a core of older scholarship students who lead a larger group of younger students towards a realization of the movement's ideals e.g. The United World College of South East Asia. c) Vocational colleges operating within the developing world e.g. The Simon Bolivar UWC of Agriculture. Each college is autonomous within the movement but shares the services of the UWC International Offices in London and Duino (Italy). There are National Committees in over 40 different countries. The colleges report to the international council of the movement. 1962: The UWC movement began with the founding of the United World College of the Atlantic in South Wales. 1971 : The new Singapore International School was brought into formal association with Atlantic College due to the efforts of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the leader of the movement at that time. 1974: Lester B. Pearson UWC of the Pacific was opened in Canada. 1975: The United World College of South East Asia became the new title of Singapore International School, as it became a full member of the movement. Subsequent additions to the movement: 1981: Waterford Kamhlaba UWC of Southern Africa, Swaziland. 1982: UWC of the Adriatic, Italy. The Armand Hammer UWC of the American West, U.S.A. 1987: Simon Bolivar UWC of Agriculture, Venezuela. 1993: Li Po Chun UWC of Hong Kong. 1995: The Red Cross Nordic UWC of Norway. 1997: The Mahindra United World College of India.
