Hello to all Mount old boys!!
I regret to announce the passing of one of the best friends I ever had. Mr.Ted Woodley passed away last week, Friday 6th June 2003. John Ward, David Morris, Adrian John Smith and myself attended the Service at Forest of Dean Crematorium on Thursday 12th June.
Mrs Betty Woodley, Brian and Brenda were there, with their families and Ted's grand children. Mr Ben Challoner, Mr. Les Pole and Mr. Alun Evans also attended. It was good to see them all again after so many years, albeit on such a sad occasion. Ben spoke during the service, a glowing tribute to our old Head Master. Amazing, he actually remembered all of our names correctly!! What a memory.
After the service, we all stood around the car park reminiscing and promising to keep in touch, as you do!
On the way back to the Monmouthshire side of the Wye, we could see the old Alma Mater still standing proud above Chepstow.
The 4 old boys decided to go and check the old school, which is now vacant and up for sale. The Bird Group had used it as their HQ for a number of years, but it has been empty now for several years and is starting to deteriate, window frames are rotting and the sky light in the attic is wide open to the elements.
The grounds are well maintained and the huge old Cedar tree on the front lawn is still there, but has had surgery, as several of the main branches have been lopped. Mr. Challoners flat and the ground floor of that part of the house has been demolished. There is an executive housing estate in the rest of the grounds. The old stables at the rear are still there, but the swimming pool which we all helped to build is gone. There is still a damp patch where it used to be! The ornate old wrought iron front gates have been re located, they are now re furbished and have been erected at the bottom of the front lawn. Mr Pole's Lodge House is still exactly as it was, I don't know if anyone is living there, but there were curtains up and it was well maintained.
In the time honoured tradition of old boys of the Mount School, we ignored the "Keep out, Trespassers will be prosecuted" sign, and clamboured over the fence by the back gate! Old farmer Bigham's land also now has exec housing on it. The Class rooms were all gone, with lawns in their place.Obviously, a landscape gardener is still maintaining the grounds. We wandered around, remembering long ago Sports Days and the places where we used to ride the bikes. We tried to peep through the windows, but they had drawn curtains over them and it was very dark inside even where we could see in.Dave Morris went around to the Stable Block and went into the old workshop where he had worked on Alun Evan's motor bikes 40 years ago!! The workshop did not have a door on it and the walls still had the original tiles on them.Having swapped memories and stories of our schooldays, we reluctantly took our leave of the old place and headed home.
David, John and myself have been in touch for nearly all of the years, as we live quite local to each other. I have been in touch with AJ for most of those years, but AJ had not seen or heard from David and John for all of that time (40 years!) They all got on really well together, so we're meeting up again in September!!
